Pulmonary Artery Catheterization and Clinical Outcomes: National Heart, Lung, and Blood Institute and Food and Drug Administration Workshop Report
Article Abstract:
An educational effort may be required to train doctors and nurses to use the pulmonary artery catheter properly. This was the conclusion of a panel of experts convened by the National Heart, Lung, and Blood Institute and the US Food and Drug Administration. This catheter is inserted into the pulmonary arteries of critically ill patients to monitor their cardiopulmonary function. However, there is little evidence that the data it provides improves their care and it may even be hazardous.

New insights into transmission, diagnosis, and drug treatment of Pneumocystis carinii pneumonia. (GRAND ROUNDS)
Article Abstract:
Monoclonal antibodies and the polymerase chain reaction have improved the diagnosis of Pneumocystis carinii pneumonia, which often affects AIDS patients. Trimethoprim-sulfamethoxazole is the most effective drug combination for preventing and treating Pneumocystis carinii pneumonia. AIDS patients who respond to highly active antiretroviral therapy (HAART) may not need to take any drugs to prevent Pneumocystis carinii pneumonia.
