Pain evaluation and management in the nursing home
Article Abstract:
Pain, a common problem among elderly people, can be managed better in the nursing home setting. Many residents report pain related to arthritis and lower back problems, diabetes neuropathy, leg cramps, headaches, and cancer. Nursing home care needs to focus more on effectively relieving pain, especially among the chronically ill. Elderly people may be reluctant to report pain for fear of causing unnecessary trouble. In addition, pain is highly subjective and its relief cannot be confirmed by measurements other than self-reports. Approaching pain with a combination of medications and alternative solutions may improve the quality of life of nursing home residents. Since side effects should be at a minimum, acetaminophen and morphine may be the best choices for the aged. Massage, educational programs, exercise, prayer, music, and relaxation all can alleviate pain.
