Sickle cell disorders and thalassaemia do not have a high healthcare priority in the UK because they are regarded as 'black' conditions, according to Tessa Liburd, coordinator and nurse counsellor at the Sickle Cell and Thalassaemia Centre in Cardiff, Wales. She highlights the fact that basic nurse education does not cover sickle cell disorders or thalassaemia.

The increased incidence of tuberculosis (TB) in the UK is discussed. The prevalence of TB among recent immigrants and the measures taken by a team of nurses at St Mary's, London, to treat patients and control the spread of TB are described.
