Relax for health
Article Abstract:
A relaxation programme introduced at Bradford psychogeriatric day hospital has confirmed the benefits of relaxation for high-anxiety patients. Six women aged between 58 and 85 years participated in a programme using E. Jacobson's progressive muscle relaxation exercises. After six sessions the participants indicated physical and psychological improvements. A post-study assessment indicated substantially reduced anxiety. A follow-up check after 12 months revealed all participants were no longer undergoing treatment.

Volunteers combat social isolation older people: care of older people should be about psychological and social well-being as well as physical needs
Article Abstract:
The Companions in Care scheme is a collaboration between Age Concern and Chester and Halton Community NHS Trust, which aims to raise the profile of older people in the community, by developing needs-led primary care. It believes that the primary health care team is in the best position to determine whether older people at home are coping. The scheme has shown that old age does not inevitably mean social isolation.
