Renal osteodystrophy
Article Abstract:
Renal osteodystrophy is a bone remodeling disease that results from late stages of kidney disease. Normal bone remodelling is stimulated by parathyroid hormone and involves the death of old cells and growth of new cells. There are various forms of renal osteodystrophy. Osteitis fibrosa, caused by high levels of parathyroid hormone, involves a high rate of bone turnover, poor calcium absorption, low bone mass, and frequent fractures. Osteomalacia, caused by toxic levels of aluminum, involves decreased bone growth with normal bone death and poor mineralization. Adynamic bone disease is poorly understood and involves decreased bone formation. Diagnosis of renal osteodystrophy may be made based on blood tests for parathyroid hormone followed by a bone biopsy. Prevention and treatment may be managed by maintaining high calcium and low phosphate levels and by administering vitamin D.

Long-term treatment of osteopetrosis with recombinant human interferon gamma
Article Abstract:
Interferon gamma treatment may be effective in patients with congenital osteopetrosis. Osteopetrosis is a rare bone disease that causes bone to accumulate in the bone marrow. Eleven osteopetrosis patients were treated with subcutaneous injections of interferon gamma-1b three times a week for 18 months. Three others received interferon gamma for six months but discontinued it. All of the patients improved on the treatment and bone marrow scans showed that their bone marrow had recovered. None of the 14 patients who had severe osteopetrosis died. Side effects during the initial six months of therapy included diarrhea and elevated body temperature. Interferon gamma therapy can be used for patients who are waiting for bone marrow transplants and patients who will not receive transplants.
