Renoprotective effect of the angiotensin-receptor antagonist irbesartan in patients with nephropathy due to type 2 diabetes
Article Abstract:
The antihypertensive drug Avapro can slow the progression of diabetic kidney disease independently of its effect on blood pressure, according to a study of 1,715 diabetics with high blood pressure. Avapro belongs to a new category of drugs called angiotensin II-receptor blockers.

Nephropathy in patients with type 2 diabetes mellitus
Article Abstract:
Patients with type 2, or adult-onset, diabetes are at risk of diabetic nephropathy. This is a kidney disease that also occurs in people with type 1, or juvenile-onset, diabetes. There is evidence that the condition may be partly genetic. Other risk factors include poor control of blood sugar, smoking, excessive dietary protein intake, and high blood pressure. Because many of these risk factors can be modified, it may be possible to prevent diabetic retinopathy. People with diabetes also have an increased risk of heart disease and once they develop kidney failure, their prognosis is grim.
