Resistance to erythromycin in group A streptococci
Article Abstract:
There was a dramatic increase in resistance of Group A streptococci to erythromycin in Finland between 1988 and 1990. Of 272 bacterial samples isolated from the blood of patients with streptococcal infection between 1988 and 1990, four percent of the samples were resistant to the drug in 1988, seven percent were resistant in 1989 and 24% were resistant in 1990. Of 3,087 bacterial samples isolated from throat swabs from infected patients during 1990, resistance to erythromycin increased from seven percent in January to 20% in December. Of 1,349 bacterial samples isolated from pus from infected patients during 1990, resistance to erythromycin increased from 11% in January to 31% in December. In 19 patients infected with erythromycin-resistant streptococci, erythromycin was ineffective in almost half. The only way to reduce erythromycin resistance is to reduce the use of erythromycin, which tripled in Finland between 1979 and 1989.

Antimicrobial resistance in Neisseria gonorrhoeae in Finland, 1976 to 1995
Article Abstract:
Although the incidence of gonorrhea in Finland fell dramatically from 1976 to 1995, the probability of infection with a drug resistant strain of Neisseria gonorrhoeae remained higher than ever. Antibiotic susceptibility tests on 337 clinical isolates collected in 1993 were compared to results from 1986. Only 20% of the specimens were susceptible to penicillin and tetracycline, falling from more than 50% of strains tested in 1986. Reports of penicillinase-producing N. gonorrhoeae (PPNG) rose from 0% in 1976 to 5.7% in 1995. Two isolates found to be resistant to ciprofloxacin are cause for further concern.

The effect of changes in the consumption of macrolide antibiotics on erythromycin resistance in group A streptococci in Finland
Article Abstract:
Reducing the use of erythromycin and other macrolide antibiotics like it successfully reduced erythromycin resistance in group A streptococci in Finland. The use of erythromycin tripled during the 1980's and the percentage of streptococcal isolates resistant to the antibiotic increased from 5% in 1988 to 13% in 1990. In 1991, national guidelines recommended reductions in erythromycin use. A study of over 39,000 streptococcal isolates between 1991 and 1996 found that the percentage of isolates resistant to erythromycin dropped from 16.5% in 1992 to 8.6% in 1996.
