Biotherapeutic agents: a neglected modality for the treatment and prevention of selected intestinal and vaginal infections
Article Abstract:
It may be time to begin seriously investigating the effectiveness of biotherapeutic agents in the treatment and prevention of infectious diseases. Biotherapeutic agents are bacteria and other organisms that can destroy pathogenic organisms that cause infection. They were widely used in the pre-antibiotic era and may become useful again now that many pathogenic organisms are becoming resistant to antibiotics. A review of the literature on the use of biotherapeutic agents reveals that various species of Saccharomyces, Lactobacillus, Bifidobacterium, Streptococcus and Enterococcus can prevent or eliminate many types of diarrhea. Lactobacillus has also been used to treat vaginal yeast infections and urinary tract infections. However, many of the studies were small and did not include a control (placebo) group.

Antibodies to the chlamydial 60 kd heat-shock protein are associated with laparoscopically confirmed perihepatitis
Article Abstract:
Women with perihepatitis-salpingitis may experience serious pelvic adhesions and increased levels of antibody to the chlamydial heat-shock protein-60. Perihepatitis is an inflammation of the liver commonly occurring with inflammation of the fallopian tubes in association with sexually transmitted diseases. Researchers compared 27 women with perihepatitis and tubal inflammation to 46 women with just tubal inflammation out of 157 women with pelvic inflammatory disease. Women with perihepatitis and tubal inflammation had significantly more moderate-to-severe pelvic adhesions and a higher antibody level to the chlamydial 60 kd heat-shock protein than did women with tubal inflammation alone.
