Relationship between resistance to insulin-mediated glucose uptake, urinary uric acid clearance, and plasma uric acid concentration
Article Abstract:
Clearance of uric acid from the blood may be related to insulin resistance. Thirty-six non-diabetic individuals drank a glucose (sugar) solution, and blood glucose uptake and insulin resistance were measured. Uric acid concentration in the blood and uric acid excreted in the urine were also assessed. Blood uric acid concentration increased as blood glucose concentration increased, and was higher in individuals who were more insulin resistant. Uric acid in the urine decreased as blood uric acid concentration increased. High blood uric acid concentration has been associated with several conditions that are associated with insulin resistance, including coronary heart disease.

Outpatient insulin therapy in type 1 and type 2 diabetes mellitus: scientific review
Article Abstract:
New types of insulin and the concept of physiologic insulin replacement provide more options for people with diabetes. Insulin is now available in rapid-acting, short-acting, intermediate-acting, or long-acting forms. It is also available in pens and pumps. Physiologic insulin replacement means attempting to mimic the body's natural secretion of insulin, which occurs primarily after a meal.
