School nurses' response to the measles vaccination campaign
Article Abstract:
A survey carried out by the Queen's Nursing Institute reveals that 92% of nurses who were involved in the campaign to immunise 8 million British schoolchildren against measles and rubella in 1994 found it a stimulating challenge. Although 95% of survey respondents had found the campaign tiring, 96% had enjoyed working in a team. Half the nurses were frustrated by their inability to contribute fully to the detailed planning of the campaign which took place largely in the school holidays. The immunisation of such a large number of children in just two months also forced nurses to put their routine work aside.

The dangers of cutting school nursing services
Article Abstract:
Many UK National Health Service healthcare trusts are cutting back their spending on school nurses. This puts the health of school-age children in danger, because school nurses respond to health issues affecting young people. These issues have included high incidences of unwanted pregnancy, drug abuse and a threatened measles epidemic. Many healthcare trusts are surveying the health needs of schoolchildren, with the aim of targeting responses appropriately, and professional bodies are urging school nurses to clinically audit their work to validate the service.

Continuing education: how well is PREP working? (post-registration education standards)
Article Abstract:
The Clinical Standards Advisory Group's (CSAG) schizophrenia committee found that standards of care for those with schizophrenia vary throughout the country and care programme approaches have not been implemented. These findings follow a report on clinical standards in services for those with schizophrenia, and provides an opportunity for health services to critically examine its functions.
