Scientists assail South Africa's 'vanity' publications
Article Abstract:
South African scientists in 2006 are demanding urgent reform of the country's publishing system following a report that most of its journals have no international credibility. The report released by the Academy of Science of South Africa found that one-third of the 255 government accredited journals are essentially vanity publishers, with not a single article in the past 14 years mentioned outside or even inside the country.

Infrastructure, biotech top African science summit agenda
Article Abstract:
Reliable infrastructure was one of the most important themes at the African Union's first science and technology summit agenda, which was held in January 2007 in Addis Ababa, Ethiopia. The summit has endorsed a proposal that each of Africa's five regions develop a biotechnology strategy within the next 20 years.

Institute surprise for Italian scientists
Article Abstract:
The Italian government has proposed making the Higher Institute of Public Health (ISS) the major biomedical research organization. It would focus in applied research and would widen its focus from AIDS and tuberculosis to include aging and cardiovascular disease.
