Screening for Hereditary Hemochromatosis in Siblings and Children of Affected Patients
Article Abstract:
Testing relatives of a patient with hereditary hemochromatosis for the C282Y mutation of the HFE gene is more cost effective than traditional blood tests. This was the conclusion of researchers who used the medical literature to estimate the cost-effectiveness of several different genetic screening strategies. Hemochromatosis is a disease characterized by abnormal iron deposits in the body.

Cost-effectiveness of screening for microsatellite instability to detect hereditary nonpolyposis colorectal cancer
Article Abstract:
Testing people with hereditary nonpolyposis colorectal cancer for gene mutations associated with colorectal cancer is cost-effective if the benefits of screening extend to siblings and children. This was the conclusion of researchers who used a computer simulation to determine the cost-effectiveness of screening.

The cost-effectiveness of screening primary care patients for depression
Article Abstract:
Screening all patients in a medical practice for depression would only be cost-effective if it is done one time only or every five years. However, this could change if the cost of screening becomes less expensive or the treatment of depression becomes more effective.
