Decreased Response to Phototherapy for Neonatal Jaundice in Breast-fed Infants
Article Abstract:
Formula-fed newborn infants with nonhemolytic hyperbilirubinemia appear to respond more rapidly to light therapy than infants fed exclusively breast milk. Neonatal jaundice is caused by an elevated blood level of the bile pigment bilirubin, and is treated with daylight lamps. Researchers compared 163 infants receiving therapy for neonatal jaundice, and found that infants fed formula or a combination of formula and breast milk recovered sooner. The therapy was effective for all of the children, but the addition of formula to the diet of breastfed infants may help depress bilirubin levels more rapidly.

Family Presence During Invasive Procedures in the Pediatric Intensive Care Unit
Article Abstract:
Allowing parents to be present while their child is undergoing an invasive procedure in an intensive care unit lessens the degree of their anxiety. Parent of 16 children undergoing nvasive procedures such as intubation and tube placement were surveyed and allowed to remain present while the procedure was being done. All but one of the nurses felt the presence of the parents was helpful to both child and parents, and that it would be an appropriate policy. Parents felt their presence was a comfort to their child and that the actual procedure was much less dire than what they had imagined.
