Solid cancers after bone marrow transplantation
Article Abstract:
People who have received a bone marrow transplant appear to have a greater risk of developing tumors years later. Researchers followed 19,229 patients who had received a bone marrow transplant between 1964 and 1990 up until 1991. Most of the patients had been treated for leukemia. These patients had a risk of developing a tumor that was 8 times higher than expected. Patients who were young had the greatest risk. Those who received high doses of radiation had a higher risk. This risk seems to be related to the chemotherapy and radiation therapy these patients usually receive.

Bone marrow transplantation for sickle cell disease
Article Abstract:
Bone marrow transplants may be a promising cure for sickle cell anemia. Twenty-two children younger than 16 with recurrent sickle cell crises were treated with a bone marrow transplant from a matching sibling. Two died within one year, one from a reaction to the transplant and one from a brain hemorrhage. In 16 of the remaining 20, the donor bone marrow began producing healthy red blood cells. The other 4 rejected the transplant. Symptoms resided in most of the 16 children who responded to the transplant. Ninety-one percent were still alive over 4 years later.
