Select committee
Article Abstract:
New European Community legislation requires consultation with employees' representatives. Non-trade union employment has increased in the UK and it is difficult to ascertain how representatives are chosen. A case study of 9 non-unionised firms examined management arrangements for employee involvement in health and safety. The case studies showed the difficulties in establishing relationships between health and safety committees. The more progressive have decentralised committee operations setting up sub-committees and directly communicate with individual employees.

Accidents: the who and where of it
Article Abstract:
Accidents experienced in the United Kingdom by workers in their place of work differ according to gender, type of industry and social class. Research in 1995 of 150,000 workers showed that factors such as long working hours, employment in the public sector and work in large organisations increased the risk of accidents at work for both men and women. Accidents occured more often to younger men aged 26-30 years and men who are manual workers involved in mining or sanitation work. For women, work in the armed forces or in farming is especially hazardous.

Health and safety management: Japanese style
Article Abstract:
Good health and safety practices are seen as a key element of operating successfully at the Sony television assembly plant at Pencoed, Wales. Managers try to ensure that health and safety is not seen as a separate issue, and that it is not assumed to be the responsibility of only a small number of specialist employees. The company operates a package approach to health and safety management, thus avoiding relying only on a single set of institutional arrangements.
