Serum concentrations of alpha tocopherol, beta carotene, and retinol preceding the diagnosis of rheumatoid arthritis and systemic lupus erythematosus
Article Abstract:
Antioxidant deficiency may predispose some people to rheumatoid arthritis and systemic lupus erythematosus. Researchers identified 21 people with rheumatoid arthritis and 6 people with lupus who developed the disease 2 to 15 years after donating blood. They were matched to 108 healthy people who had also donated blood at that time. Analysis of all the blood samples revealed that the patients with rheumatoid arthritis and lupus had lower blood concentrations of several antioxidants, including vitamins E and A and beta carotene at the time they donated blood.

No serological indications that systemic lupus erythematosus is linked with exposure to human parvovirus B19
Article Abstract:
There is no evidence that human parvovirus B19 causes systemic lupus erythematosus (SLE), according to a study of 99 SLE patients and 99 healthy volunteers. In fact, researchers found that the healthy volunteers were more likely to test positive for human parvovirus B19 than the SLE patients.
