Vitamin A deficiency and xerophthalmia in western Yemen
Article Abstract:
Clinical examination and a blood serum survey of a stratified sample of children in western Yemen reveal the widespread prevalence of xerophthalmia and vitamin A deficiency. One-half of one percent of the children suffer from night blindness, 1.7% from Bitot's spots, and 0.04% from corneal ulceration. A serum retinol level of less than 10 micrograms per dl is present in 7.2% of the population and 63% have levels less than 20 micrograms per dl. This indicates a need to start a vitamin A deficiency control program is felt.

Clinical signs of iron deficiency
Article Abstract:
The clinical sign of blue sclera in iron deficiency anemia was evaluated on the basis of results obtained from a study of eight healthy females chosen because of low serum ferritin. It was shown that none of the women had sky blue sclera although five showed pale palpebral conjunctiva and one had a tinge of dark blue at the margin of the cornea. It was suggested that the definition of sky blue sclera in anemia be further elaborated or otherwise considered as a sign of another pathologic entity.
