Sex and urinary tract infections
Article Abstract:
The link between sexual intercourse and urinary tract infections in women has been known for many years. What is not known is exactly how intercourse leads to infection. A 1996 study confirms the association, finding the risk of urinary tract infection to be 9 times higher in women who had sex every day of the previous week compared to women who had no sex during that time. The use of spermicides may alter the vaginal environment, allowing pathogenic bacteria to gain a foothold. Other contraceptives may reduce the risk of urinary tract infection.

Human metapneumovirus--an important new respiratory virus
Article Abstract:
Doctors must learn as much as they can about a newly discovered virus called human metapneumovirus. This virus was first discovered in 2001 and a study published in 2004 found that it can cause lower respiratory tract infection, particularly in children. It is related to respiratory syncytial virus, which also causes respiratory tract infection in children.

Asymptomatic bacteriuria -- important or not?
Article Abstract:
Many women have bacteria in their urine, especially after sexual intercourse. In most cases, they have no symptoms and the bacteria will eventually be cleared. However, they may be at higher risk of a urinary tract infection.
