Single-dose methotrexate for the treatment of ectopic pregnancy: Northwestern Memorial Hospital three-year experience
Article Abstract:
Injections of methotrexate may be useful in eliminating ectopic pregnancies without surgery. Researchers injected 50 women with a single dose of methotrexate to treat ectopic pregnancy. Pregnancies were successfully ended for 32 women (64%) after one dose of methotrexate. Another seven women were treated with one or two additional injections of methotrexate. The remaining 11 women needed surgery to end the pregnancies. Women with high beta-human chorionic gonadotropin levels before the first methotrexate injection were more likely to need additional injections or surgery.

Treating ectopic pregnancy with the combination of mifepristone and methotrexate: a phase II nonrandomized study
Article Abstract:
Mifepristone combined with methotrexate appears to be more effective in inducing abortion in ectopic pregnancies than methotrexate alone. During an ectopic pregnancy, the developing embryo implants in the Fallopian tubes instead of the uterus. Researchers compared the outcome of 30 pregnant women who received mifepristone and methotrexate for an ectopic pregnancy with the outcome of 42 who receive methotrexate alone. Abortion was induced in all but one of the women who received both drugs and all but 11 of the women who received methotrexate alone.

Predictors of success with methotrexate treatment of tubal ectopic pregnancy at Grady Memorial Hospital
Article Abstract:
A single intramuscular injection of the drug methotrexate can cure ectopic pregnancy in up to 85% of all women, according to a study of 81 patients. Ectopic pregnancy occurs when the embryo implants in a location other than the uterus. This study also found that the presence of a yolk sac on an ultrasound scan was a sign of treatment failure.
