Cellular immunity to cartilage aggrecan core protein in patients with rheumatoid arthritis and non-arthritic controls
Article Abstract:
A portion of a protein found in joint cartilage, called aggrecan, seems to interact in the immune response associated with rheumatoid arthritis (RA) that leads to joint damage. Researchers tested the immune response of blood cells from 48 patients with RA (study group) and 32 age-matched surgery patients (controls) when combined with isolated aggrecan from corresponding joint cartilage or synthetic protein segments. There was a greater immune response rate for the study group (67%) than the controls (37%) after mixing the blood cells with aggrecan. There was evidence of an immune response in 7 of 15 additional study group blood samples mixed with a smaller concentration of aggrecan. Four of these responsive samples also demonstrated an immune response to the synthetic protein.

Annexin V autoantibodies in rheumatoid arthritis
Article Abstract:
Annexin V (ANX5) autoantibodies appear to play a role in the autoimmune response seen in patients with rheumatoid arthritis that do not appear to be affected by glucocorticoid treatment. Autoantibodies are antibodies directed at normal body tissue. ANX5 blood levels were measured in 51 patients with rheumatoid arthritis and 49 age and gender matched volunteers (control group). Patients had significantly higher ANX5 blood levels than the control group. These levels did not correspond to other measures of disease activity nor to treatment concentrations.
