Liver biopsy findings in 501 patients infected with human immunodeficiency virus (HIV)
Article Abstract:
Liver biopsies may lead to diagnoses approximately two-thirds of the time when HIV-infected people have symptoms such as fever, abnormal blood tests reflecting liver function, or an enlarged liver. Liver disease is common among people with AIDS and its accurate diagnosis is important, though using liver biopsy to make such diagnosis is controversial. Researchers reviewed the results of liver biopsies in 501 HIV-infected people. A definitive diagnosis that was not made from other tests resulted in 322 (64%) of these biopsies. These diagnoses included Mycobacterium avium infection, hepatitis, and cytomegalovirus. The diagnosis indicated a potentially treatable disease in 46% of the biopsies. This study does not indicate how effective biopsies are in terms of improving final patient outcome.

Studies of body composition and fat distribution in HIV-infected and control subjects
Article Abstract:
It is incorrect to assume that changes in distribution of body fat in HIV patients are the result of the therapeutic use of protease inhibitors. The phenomenon was observed before combination antiretroviral therapy came into use. Alterations in body fat are a characteristic of HIV infection, with a marked decrease in subcutaneous fat and an increase in deposits of visceral or abdominal fat. This alteration in fat distribution may be the result of levels of HIV RNA in the blood rather than being attributable to the therapy being used.
