Special solutions
Article Abstract:
The UK Special Hospitals Service Authority (SHSA) has initiated a review of special hospital seclusion policies for disturbed inmates. A multi-disciplinary steering group has investigated confinement practices in 71 special hospitals. It found confinement may be used for various reasons such as locking-up at night as well as solitary confinement. Removing night restrictions may reduce seclusion and alter staff perceptions of inmates. However, seclusion may be necessary sometimes for dangerous patients.

Article Abstract:
A project in Northamptonshire has been set up to encourage practice nurses to recognise depression and, in some cases, to intervene. This is in response to the increasing numbers of people with mental health problems living in the community. About 90 practices have taken part in the project since it began in 1994, and further practices will join the second phase. Patients are encourages to see practice nurses at walk-in session, and they can be referred to counsellors, CPNs or GPs for further help.

A day to keep in mind
Article Abstract:
World Mental Health Day has been held since 1992 and its aim is to make the public aware of the plight of the mentally ill. In the UK, many mental health nurses and professionals will support the day with a series of local initiatives, but some wonder whether the current political and social climate is conducive to its success.
