Sports medicine
Article Abstract:
Female athletes have a higher injury rate than do males. The eating disorders anorexia and bulimia are often diagnosed in female athletes, although sport itself does not cause them. The stress of athletic participation may precipitate symptoms in susceptible women. Research on menstrual cycle disruption and the possible detrimental effects of premenstrual symptoms and cramps on athletic performance needs to be increased. Drug use by athletes has dropped, but anabolic steroid use is still a serious concern. Though athletes are aware of the danger, they feel invulnerable to adverse effects. New physical therapy techniques simulate the movement of daily and athletic activity. The goal is to get the athletes back to playing within five to six months. Improvement in meniscus tear repairs allows the meniscus to be retained, avoiding premature arthritis associated with meniscus loss.

Sports medicine
Article Abstract:
The most important advance in sports medicine has been the discovery that regular physical exercise can provide substantial health benefits. Even moderate exercise can significantly lower mortality from heart disease. Proposed national guidelines recommend that all adults engage in 30 to 40 minutes of exercise five to seven days a week. The discovery of syndrome X links high blood pressure, glucose intolerance, elevated lipid levels and obesity. Studies have shown that pregnant women can exercise without risk to their baby. Specific exercise guidelines are being developed for the elderly.

Aspirations and ideals in the Olympic Games
Article Abstract:
Prior to the formation of the International Olympic Committee (IOC) Medical Commission in 1967, sports medicine was not taken very seriously by many coaches. Now the Commission plays an important role in applying research methods to sports. The Subcommission on Doping and Biochemistry of Sport has created procedures for dealing with doping. The Subcommission on Biomechanics and Physiology of Sport researches biomechanical techniques for improving performance. The Subcommission on Sports Medicine and Orthopaedics teaches athletes ways to avoid injuring joints and muscles.
