Stimulatory autoantibodies to the PDGF receptor in systemic sclerosis
Article Abstract:
The hypothesis that patients with scleroderma have serum autoantibodies that stimulate the platelet-derived growth factor (PDGF) receptor (PDGFR), activating collagen-gene expression is tested. The purification of anti-PDGFR reactive oxygen species (ROS)-stimulating antibodies and the results of tests of their biologic activity as purified clones strongly argue that these antibodies have a causal role in the pathogenesis of scleroderma.

Concordance among gene-expression-based predictors for breast cancer
Article Abstract:
An analysis of a single data set of breast-cancer samples from 295 women is described on which five prognostic or predictive gene-expression-based models were simultaneously compared. Four of the five tested showed significant agreement in the outcome predictions for individual patients and are probably tracking a common set of biologic phenotypes.

A polymorphism in the CTGF promoter region associated with systemic sclerosis
Article Abstract:
A polymorphism is genotyped in the promoter of the connective-tissue growth factor (CTGF) to study more about systemic sclerosis (scleroderma), an autoimmune disease. The results show that the polymorphism helps in the treatment of the disease by repressing the CTGF transcription.
