Straight talking
Article Abstract:
Mentally handicapped people should be able to talk openly about their disability to help mitigate their trauma. Handicapped people may be denied the chance to explore how they feel different, with this denial implying shame. A group of mentally handicapped people were studied and found to be confused about their individual disabilities. They remembered the distress and shock of being told about their handicap, particularly when the information was thoughtlessly conveyed. Mentally disabled people feel isolated and lonely, with their inability to converse about their handicap possibly increasing their shyness in establishing relationships with the non-handicapped. Handicapped people with parents who have openly discussed their disabilities become better-adjusted adults.

How counselling services can help deal with loss and change
Article Abstract:
The general move in the UK towards care in the community means that many people with learning disabilities are being transferred from hospitals to community-based homes. Generally, the move is welcomed, but some people have found it difficult to come to terms with the change in their lifestyles. In a bid to help mentally-handicapped people cope with their feelings, a new counselling service, offering personal support, has been set up in Stoke-on-Trent, England.
