Studies link intestinal microbes with obesity
Article Abstract:
Weight loss and gain are often explained by the simple calculation of the number of calories consumed and expended, but studies show that intestinal microbes may also play a role in the regulation of body weight. Researchers claim that a balance between two divisions of beneficial bacteria, namely Bacteroidetes and Firmicutes, which reside in the gut, appears to be important in determining an individual's predisposition for obesity.

Pain and the brain: Researchers focus on tackling pain memories
Article Abstract:
The American Pain Society has revealed that both physiological and behavioral therapies have varying but sometimes comparable effects on patients, and that individualized interventions might be the best way to relieve patients' pain. Painful experiences could create changes in the brain, which are pain memories through the same mechanisms that enable human beings to learn and retain memories.

Researchers eye "predatory" bacterium for novel antimicrobial strategies
Article Abstract:
Scientists have unveiled details of how a unique microbe seeks and destroys a variety of plant and animal pathogens. The researchers are now able to describe the molecular mechanism used by these predatory bacteria, including those involving many novel antimicrobial enzymes.
