Doctors attending the annual scientific session of the American Heart Association heard that aggressive therapy for heart attack may be better than conservative therapy. Aggressive therapy includes drugs to lower cholesterol, drugs that prevent blood clotting, and surgical techniques to open clogged arteries.

Progress in percutaneous heart procedures leads to update in clinical guidelines

The cardiology community has updated guidelines for percutaneous coronary intervention (PCI) by noting new improvements in devices, techniques, and medications. The guidelines states that primary PCI procedures on patients with myocardial infarction should be performed by experienced physicians and recommends that elective PCI should not be performed at institutions that do not have on-site cardiac surgery facilities.
