Studies track treatment of HIV-infected newborns

Article Abstract:

Treatment of mothers and newborn babies with zidovudine (AZT) for HIV infections was successful in a North Carolina study, but a similar study in a Bronx, NY, healthcare center reported about 33% noncompliance. In the NC group of 87 infants, only about 5% of babies in the treated group were infected, while more than 18% of the untreated mothers produced infected babies. Some women in the Bronx group refused treatment, perhaps because they were drug abusers or they did not believe the treatment was safe and effective.

Medication improves autism symptoms, studies show

Article Abstract:

Three new studies shed light on the complexities of autism. A study conducted by Dr. Christopher J. McDougle found that patients treated with fluvoxamine displayed fewer symptoms of autism than patients treated with a placebo. An second study conducted by Dr. McDougle found that tryptophan depletion may be linked to increased violent behaviors in autistic patients. Research conducted by Joachim Hallmayer found that the X chromosome may hold a gene of minor influence in autism.

Anti-clotting treatment not for stroke patients

Article Abstract:

Not all stroke patients benefit from intravenous thrombolysis. The administration of recombinant tissue plasminogen activator within six hours of a stroke that causes moderate neurological damage can help the patient. Those stroke victims with extreme brain damage have a much greater risk of a major parenchymal hemorrage when recombinant tissue plasminogen activator is administered.
