Influence of the volume of osteonecrosis on the outcome of core decompression of the femoral head
Article Abstract:
Success of core decompression of the femoral head in patients with osteonecrosis may depend on the extent of bone degeneration before surgery. Femoral osteonecrosis (ON) is the death of the hip bone, and surgical treatment may prevent the need for prosthetic replacement of the joint. Researchers used magnetic resonance imaging to evaluate the degree of ON in 20 hips prior to surgical decompression. After 24 months, half the hips remained stable and half got worse. Successful cases had an average of 22% necrosis before surgery, and failed cases an average of 45% necrosis.

Increased level of apolipoprotein B/apolipoprotein A 1 ratio as a potential risk for osteonecrosis
Article Abstract:
The authors determined that a high ratio of apolipoprotein B to apolipoprotein A1 is related to the risk of osteonecrosis (dying bone) in the head of the femur. Determining this ratio may enable physicians to predict the risk of the disorder.
