Article Abstract:
Thailand reduced the prevalence of leprosy from 50 cases per 10,000 in 1953, to 0.51 cases per 10,000 in 1996, through comprehensive testing and drug treatment services. The World Health Organization and other agencies assisted in the reduction of this disease.

The legacy of the water decade
Article Abstract:
The safety of the world's water supply improved steadily in the 1980s, but some 1 billion people still lack access to potable water. An effort is underway to eradicate water-related diseases, such as schistosomiasis, but poor sanitation hinders progress.

World health policy officials in Africa and elsewhere intend to eradicate dracunculiasis by 1995. Improving the quality of drinking water in Africa will also prevent the spread of other water-related diseases such as river blindness.
