Suicide Prevention Among Active Duty Air Force Personnel--United States, 1990-1999
Article Abstract:
A suicide prevention program begun by the US Air Force has been very successful. The annual suicide rate among active duty USAF personnel increased from 10.0 suicides per 100,000 members in 1990 to 16.4 suicides per 100,000 members in 1994. Suicide caused 23% of all deaths among active duty U.S. Air Force (USAF) personnel. In response to this, a suicide prevention plan was implemented across the entire USAF during 1996 and 1997. Between 1994 and 1998, the suicide rate among USAF members decreased from 16.4 suicides per 100,000 members to 9.4. The estimated suicide rate in 1999 is 2.2 suicides per 100,000 members.

Adjuvant chemotherapy with gemcitabine vs observation in patients undergoing curative-intent resection of pancreatic cancer: A randomized controlled trial
Article Abstract:
A randomized controlled trial is used to test that adjuvant chemotherapy with gemcitabine administered after complete resection of pancreatic cancer has improved disease-free survival by 6 months or more. The results have shown that postoperative gemcitabine has delayed the development of recurrent disease after complete resection of pancreatic cancer, supporting the use of gemcitabine as adjuvant chemotherapy in resectable carcinoma of the pancreas.
