Supporting patients with Crohn's disease
Article Abstract:
Crohn's disease sufferers should be treated for the psychological impact of the disease as well as the physical and social aspects which affect their daily lives. The average age of a Crohn's disease patient is between 20 years old and 40 years old, with the UK National Association for Crohn's Disease claiming there are 120,000 sufferers in the UK in 1998. Bowel obstruction and a colostomy may be necessary for patients, due to the debilitating nature of the disease.

A working party from health group, Back Exchange has recommended criteria for efficient back-care services. The Back Care Advisory Service (BCAS) should meet legislative requirements, promote a safe working environment and educate staff in safe handling techniques. An expert back care adviser should manage the service. Work place risk assessment should determine working practice. The BCAS should influence ergonomic design of work areas.
