Technologies described at radiology meeting someday may de deployed in war against cancer
Article Abstract:
Several radiologic innovations and their use in the diagnosis and treatment of cancer were presented at the 1995 Annual Meeting of the Radiological Society of North America. One promising diagnostic technique is magnetic resonance elastography, which is being tested at the Mayo Clinic. This technique uses magnetic resonance imaging to visualize the pattern of sound waves as they pass through the body. Tumors often have a different density than normal tissue and could be easily visualized. Other researchers are using transvaginal ultrasound on women with abnormal uterine bleeding whose endometrial biopsy was negative. The technique revealed endometrial cancer in five of the women. Computed tomography is being used to guide needle biopsy of melanoma metastases to determine their expression of a gene for HLA-B7 that was inserted into the tumor to induce an immune rejection of the foreign tissue. Six of 10 treated patients who received this gene therapy experienced a complete or partial remission.

Evaluating estrogen for Alzheimer disease poses ethical and logistical challenges
Article Abstract:
Physicians are at odds over the ethics of recruiting women for a clinical trial of estrogen in the prevention of Alzheimer's disease. There are preliminary data that postmenopausal women who take estrogen have a lower risk of developing Alzheimer's disease. Two long-term studies have been designed to attempt to confirm these findings, but researchers are having trouble recruiting women. There is already some evidence that estrogen prevents bone loss and reduces the risk of heart disease. For this reason, many women are reluctant to enter a trial in which they may be given a placebo.
