Differential impact of combined antiretroviral therapy on the survival of Italian patients with specific AIDS-defining illnesses
Article Abstract:
Most AIDS patients are living longer since the introduction of highly active antiretroviral therapy (HAART), with the exception of patients with Burkitt's lymphoma and primary brain lymphoma. In Italy, the percentage of AIDS patients who were still alive two years after their diagnosis doubled from 31% before 1995 to 66% after.

Response to highly active antiretroviral therapy according to duration of HIV infection
Article Abstract:
There appears to be no advantage in treating HIV patients soon after they become infected. This was the conclusion of researchers who evaluated the response to AIDS drugs in 277 patients who had been infected for different lengths of time.

Temporal changes in the rate of progression to death among Italians with known date of HIV seroconversion: estimates of the population effect of treatment
Article Abstract:
The risk of death among Italian HIV patients was much lower in 1997 than in 1991, according to a study of 1,535 patients. This is most likely due to the use of combination drug therapies that suppress viral levels to undetectable levels.
