Tetracycline-resistant Neisseria gonorrhoeae: characteristics of patients and isolates at a London genitourinary medicine clinic
Article Abstract:
Tetracycline-resistant Neisseria gonorrhoeae (TRNG) may be more common among Afro-Caribbean groups in the UK than among homosexual men. Researchers analyzed tetracycline resistance in 378 gonorrhea specimens at a London hospital. Forty-two specimens (11%) were tetracycline resistant. N. gonorrhoeae strains that produced an enzyme that breaks down penicillin comprised 31% of TRNG and 5% of non-resistant gonorrhea. Afro-Caribbeans were significantly more likely to have TRNG, with 81% of TRNG samples coming from these patients. These patients may not engage in sex with people outside their community, thus containing the TRNG.

Acceptability and compliance with daily injections of procaine penicillin in the outpatient treatment of syphilis-treponemal infection
Article Abstract:
Evidence suggests that most patients with syphilis-treponemal infections follow through with recommended daily penicillin injections. One hundred sixty-eight of 210 patients with syphilis-treponemal infections chose to have daily penicillin injections given at an out-patient clinic. Eighty-eight percent of the patients scheduled to receive injections returned for their daily injections. Of those given daily injections, 54% received high concentration injections, 34% received low concentration injections, and 12% received varying injection concentrations. There were few reported side effects.

Resistance of Neisseria gonorrhoeae Epidemic Strains to Antibiotics
Article Abstract:
The bacterium that causes gonorrhea is becoming resistant to many commonly used antibiotics. Chinese researchers tested the effect of penicillin, tetracycline, spectinomycin, ceftriaxone, and ciprofloxacin on samples of the bacterium isolated from patients' blood. Over half the bacterial strains tested were resistant to tetracycline and ciprofloxacin and one-third were resistant to penicillin.
