The PROEF diet - a new postoperative regimen for oral feeding
Article Abstract:
The postoperative regimen for oral early feeding (PROEF) does not appear to impair gastrointestinal function in women who undergo cesarean section. Traditionally, patients who have abdominal surgery do not resume eating until normal bowel function returns because early feeding is thought to cause nausea and vomiting. Of 118 pregnant women who had a cesarean section, 60 received the PROEF diet and 58 received a normal postoperative diet consisting of clear liquids. The PROEF diet is an enriched strawberry-flavored slush. Among women on the PROEF diet, bowel function returned to normal an average of 10.3 hours after surgery compared with 14.5 hours among women on the normal hospital diet. Women on the PROEF diet resumed eating regular food 2.0 days after surgery compared with 2.3 days among women on the hospital diet. One patient on the PROEF diet became nauseous compared with four patients on the hospital diet.

Single oral dose fluconazole compared with conventional clotrimazole topical therapy of Candida vaginitis
Article Abstract:
A single oral dose of fluconazole appears to be as effective as a seven-day course of daily topical treatment with clotrimazole for treating vaginal Candida infections. A group of 429 women with vaginal Candida infections were randomly assigned to the oral or conventional topical treatment. Two weeks later, 73% of the orally treated patients were cured and 21% were improved versus 67% and 30%, respectively, in the topically treated group. Thirty-five days after treatment was initiated, 75% of both groups remained cured. Women with a history of recurrent Candida infections were less likely to remain cured, but no differences were found between treatment groups. Twenty-seven percent of orally treated patients and 17% of topically treated patients reported side effects such as headache, abdominal pain, or nausea, but few side effects were severe.

Identification of at-risk women for osteoporosis screening
Article Abstract:
Older age, low body weight, and lack of estrogen after menopause are risk factors for osteoporosis, according to a study of 1,610 menopausal women. Osteoporosis is a thinning of bones, which can lead to fractures. Women with these risk factors might benefit from dual energy X-ray absorptiometry scanning, which is a non-invasive way of measuring bone density.
