Human rabies - Montana and Washington, 1997
Article Abstract:
Two cases of human rabies in the Northwest illustrate the second cases to occur in Montana and Washington since 1995. Both were elderly men who developed neurologic symptoms such as slurred speech, weakness and eventual respiratory arrest. Both men died within weeks of their hospitalization. Both were initially considered to have a brain disease called Creutzfeldt-Jakob disease but brain samples taken at autopsy tested positive for the rabies virus. The family of the Montana man remembered seeing a bat in the house but no obvious link to bats was discovered for the Washington man.

Development of donor-derived prostate cancer in a recipient following orthotopic heart transplantation
Article Abstract:
A 58-year-old man developed metastatic prostate cancer after receiving a heart transplant. He received the heart in Feb, 1994, at which time cancer cells and an enlarged prostate were detected in the donor at autopsy. Ten months later, he complained of back and rib pain. A bone scan revealed metastatic cancer in his ribs and spine. However, a prostate biopsy was negative for cancer. Transplant recipients have to take drugs to suppress their immune system so they do not reject the transplant. However, this makes them susceptible to cancer.
