The Wenckebach Phenomenon: A Salute and Comment on the Centennial of Its Original Description
Article Abstract:
In 1899, Karel F. Wenckebach described the complicated arrhythmia that was subsequently named after him. This was before electrocardiography was invented and before the discovery of the sinoatrial and atrioventricular nodes. Wenckebach was born and educated in the Netherlands and studied heart rhythms in frogs. He began his clinical practice in 1891, but returned to medical research in 1896. In 1898 he used radial arterial pulse tracings and experimental atrial and ventricular pulse tracings from a frog heart to discover the mechanism of partial heart block. He is considered to be one of the founders of modern cardiology.
