The bane of Albania: the country's health system is in a state of chaos, but the work of many health projects continues despite the chronic lack of resources
Article Abstract:
Many health projects set up in Albania after the collapse of communism were jeopardized due to the political instability, but they are being kept going and even new ones are starting up. The Inter-church Organisation for the Developement Cooperation started a women's health clinic in rural northern Albania in 1994, offering primary health care and providing ultrasound and minor surgery facilities. The East European Partnership has established midwifery projects in the north and expects the projects to continue, but nurse and project officer Dorothy Flatman, believes that the essentials such as food, medicine and water are lacking, rather than expertise.

In whose best interest?: euthanasia is an issue that refuses to go away
Article Abstract:
Euthanasia is illegal in the Netherlands but strict guidelines have been developed over the past 25 years, allowing doctors to escape prosecution. Patients also have to be considered competent and to have made clear requests before euthanasia could be considered. The Blauwborje nursing home in Groningen has been accused of the attempted murder of a patient with Alzheimer's disease. The home forbids euthanasia, but believes that medical treatment to prolong the life of paitent with no hope of recovery is wrong.

A peaceful, public death
Article Abstract:
'Death on Request,' is a Dutch documentary made by religious production company IKON, which shows the case of a man who requested euthanasia. Cees van Wendel de Joode was suffering from amyotrophic lateral sclerosis, and was going through the final stages when he requested euthanasia in preference to dying in hospital. The documentary shows the dilemma of the doctor involved, the feelings of the patient himself, and finally the act itself.
