The battle for hearts and minds
Article Abstract:
Mental health issues are attracting a lot of media and political interest in the UK. The views of the mental health charities illustrate the different factions amongst those interested in the care of the mentally ill, and indicate the range of possibilities for mental health policy. The charity MIND is keen to reverse negative perceptions of the mentally ill and focuses on user involvement in mental health care planning. The Zito Trust and the charity SANE both focus on the risk to families and members of the public created by caring for mentally disordered people in the community.

'Psycho' headlines add to mental illness misery
Article Abstract:
Negative media coverage of mental illness can aggravate some people's mental health problems, according to a survey published by mental health charity Mind. A third of the 515 people surveyed stated that they felt more depressed or anxious because of negative media coverage of mental illness, with one in 12 indicating that they felt more suicidal. Media stereotyping of mentally ill people as dangerous and uncontrollable leads to discrimination against the mentally ill by employers and work colleagues.
