Run-in periods in randomized trials: implications for the application of results in clinical practice
Article Abstract:
Run-in periods prior to beginning a clinical study can be used to include or exclude certain study subjects who may affect the outcome. Researchers may seek to exclude people who do not comply with treatment instructions, do not tolerate the drug, or respond to placebo. Run-in periods may also select patients for study who closely resemble patients in clinical practice in order to enhance the applicability of the research. However, excluding unresponsive patients or those with adverse reactions to treatment may result in a study which overestimates the benefit of treatment.

Screening for bipolar disorder in a primary care practice
Article Abstract:
A study is made for bipolar disorder in adult primary care patients and to examine its clinical presentation and effect on functioning. The conclusion is made that because of the risks associated with treating bipolar disorder with antidepressant monotherapy, efforts are needed to educate primary care physicians about the screening, management and pharmacotherapy of bipolar disorders.
