The choice of antibacterial drugs
Article Abstract:
An updated review of antibacterial drugs for various bacterial infections is presented, focusing on both old and new drugs. A detailed table lists the drugs and alternatives for each cause of infection. Effective drugs for pneumonia are discussed in the context of ambulatory and hospital care. Special attention is focused on meningitis, especially in children, sepsis syndrome, and urinary tract infection. Gram-negative bacilli in hospitals are becoming increasingly resistant to several classes of antibiotics. Many enterococci have also become drug resistant to vancomycin, penicillin, ampicillin, gentamicin or streptomycin or both. A listing of trade names corresponds to each drug in alphabetical order.

The choice of antibacterial drugs
Article Abstract:
Some bacteria can produce community-acquired pneumonia, and the choice of treatment depends upon the results of bacterial culture, the condition of the patient, and the response to treatment. Cephalosporins are often used as first treatment in meningitis and sepsis, guided by the source of infection, results of bacterial cultures and susceptibility tests, the patient's immune status, and response to initial care. A number of oral antibiotics effectively treat urinary tract infections. A table of drugs effective against specific organisms, and associated costs is included.
