The cost of caring
Article Abstract:
The bursary paid to student nurses in the UK has failed to rise in line with the retail price index. This has created financial difficulties for many student nurses, and could be contributing to drop-outs among student nurses. Research undertaken among 391 pre-registration students indicates that just over half are in paid employment, even though the nursing course requires 40 hours of study each week. Almost half of those in part-time employment are working more than 10 hours a week.
