The discovery of radioactivity
Article Abstract:
The discovery of X-rays by William Rontgen in 1895 aroused the curiosity of other scientists regarding radioactivity. Scientific discoveries at the end of the 19th century laid the foundation for nuclear medicine, radiodiagnosis with radioactive tracers, radiotherapy, radiobiology and radioprotection.

The history of nuclear medicine began with the discovery of X-rays by William Rontgen in 1895. The subsequent discovery of artificial radioisotopes by Irene Joliot-Curie and Frederic Joliot in 1934 was the breakthrough that led to the development of modern tracer diagnosis.

The year 1995 is the centennial of the discovery of X-rays by William Rontgen. Within months of the discovery, physicians began using X-ray images to guide their surgeries and to treat cancers, lupus and various skin diseases.
