The effect of different diagnostic criteria on the prevalence of dementia
Article Abstract:
The diagnosis of dementia is substantially affected by the classification system used to evaluate the patient. Six common systems were applied in assessing 1,879 elderly people. The frequency of dementia varied considerably, from 58 people (3.1%) using the International Classification of Diseases (ICD-10) to 546 people (29.1%) using the American Psychiatric Association Diagnostic Manual (DSM-III). Twenty subjects met the criteria for dementia in all six classifications. This variance has implications in research, treatment, insurance and patients' rights and freedoms.

Aging and the public health effects of dementia
Article Abstract:
A study published in 2001 found that the average survival of elderly people diagnosed with dementia was only three years. However, the average age of the patients was 84 years and their survival rates were not compared to the survival rates of 80-year-old patients without dementia.
