The effect of finasteride in men with benign prostatic hyperplasia
Article Abstract:
Five milligrams (mg) of finasteride each day may be an effective treatment for prostatic hyperplasia. Prostatic hyperplasia is an increase in the number of cells in the prostate gland not caused by growth of a tumor. Among 895 men with prostatic hyperplasia who were treated for 12 months, 297 took five milligrams of finasteride each day, 298 took one mg of finasteride each day and 300 took a placebo, an inactive substance. Patients treated with either dose of finasteride per day experienced a significant decrease in urinary symptoms such as obstruction of the urethra, but those treated with placebo did not. Men treated with finasteride experienced an 18% to 19% decrease in the volume of the prostate gland, compared to 3% for those who received a placebo. Treatment with finasteride can cause decreased libido, impotence and ejaculatory disorders.

The effect of finasteride on the risk of acute urinary retention and the need for surgical treatment among men with benign prostatic hyperplasia
Article Abstract:
Finasteride therapy may reduce the need for prostate surgery and the risk of acute urinary retention in men with enlarged prostate glands. Researchers treated 3,040 men for four years with finasteride or placebo, and monitored urinary symptoms, complications, and the need for surgical treatment. During the study, 10% of men taking the placebo required prostate surgery, compared to 5% of men taking finasteride. An inability to urinate developed in 7% of men taking the placebo and 3% of men taking the drug. Finasteride therapy caused the prostate to shrink and increased the flow of urine.

The long-term effect of doxazosin, finasteride, and combination therapy on the clinical progression of benign prostatic hyperplasia
Article Abstract:
Doxazosin and finasteride in combination may be more effective in treating benign prostate enlargement than either drug alone, according to a study of 3,047 men. Doxazosin and both drugs together also reduced the risk of urinary retention and the need for surgery, but finasteride alone did not.
