The effectiveness of treatment for substance abuse: reasons for optimism
Article Abstract:
Substance abuse treatment has shown a high rate of failure. Modalities aimed at improving a patient's interpersonal relationship such as social skills training and behavioral marital therapy, elicit some success. Suppression of substance use is the goal of pharmacologic and behavioral techniques. Behavioral and social interactive techniques enhance development of coping skills. Treatment methods and therapist-patient interactions also determine effectiveness of a program. Furthermore, treatment protocols should be individualized per patient. The failures of previous procedures should be analyzed in planning a new substance abuse treatment protocol.

Different intake procedures: the influence on treatment start and treatment response - a quasi-experimental study
Article Abstract:
A study involving 200 Norwegian substance abusers found that therapeutic communities should use intake group (IG) procedures with all applicants but that IGs should be limited to role induction in teaching coping skills. The IGs are meant to encourage abusers to enter and complete treatment programs through group preparation; therapeutic communities have resorted to IGs in response to the growing waiting lists for drug abuse treatment. Moreover, the study found that participants who successfully entered the program were likely to be HIV positive and to use amphetamines more than alcohol.
