The future face of coinfection: prevalence and incidence of HIV and hepatitis C virus coinfection among young injection drug users
Article Abstract:
HIV and hepatitis C virus (HCV) coinfection is a serious concern in North America, mainly among injection drug users (IDUs). Approximately 40% of individuals living with HIV infection are coinfected with HCV and among HIV-positive IDUs approximately 50% to 90% are coinfected with HCV, hence it is suggested that appropriate public health interventions should be implemented immediately.

Model projections on the required coverage of syringe distribution to prevent HIV epidemics among injecting drug users

A mathematical model is developed to explore the relationship between the endemic HIV prevalence among injecting drug users and the coverage of syringe distribution. The results support a policy of increasing the coverage of syringe distribution but highlight the difficulty in producing a universal coverage target,
