The importance of social histories for assessing sexually transmitted disease risk
Article Abstract:
Doctors who treat sexually transmitted disease (STD) patients may need to take better patient histories and improve their ability to discuss risk behaviors to help prevent STDs. The cases of nine STD patients are reviewed to illustrate the point that STDs cannot be discounted among older patients. All nine patients did not think they were at risk for acquiring an STD because they were older. Eight of the patients were linked through sexual contact, including a 63-year-old woman who was blind, diabetic, and had syphilis. Her particular case may illustrate the need for doctors to discard their assumptions about the sexual activity of older and handicapped people and to pursue social history information from their older patients. Doctors should aggressively yet sensitively interview STD patients to help them understand their risk for STDs, including HIV.

Providers of syphilis care in the southern United States
Article Abstract:
The southern United States may not provide adequate access to medical care for the treatment of syphilis. Researchers conducted a survey of sexually transmitted disease (STD) control programs in the seven largest southern cities, 10 southern states, and nine other states. Some southern STD programs reported that they could not provide care on the same day that syphilis patients came to the clinics. Percentages of patients seen the same day they visited the clinic ranged from 58% to 100%. Quality of care was reported to be inadequate in private clinics in nine states and cities. The ratio of STD care providers to patients was much lower in the south than in other states. STD care providers differed from patients in gender and race.
