The last straw
Article Abstract:
Nursing legal advisors are trying to establish that nurses are susceptible to work-related cumulative back injury. Previous compensation awards have been related to specific incidents. However, experts maintain that 40% of back problems result from repetitive strain. A successful compensation claim for repetitive strain injury has encouraged the Royal College of Nursing to put forward a test case. European Regulations on employers' ergonomic responsibilites may support a claim.

Morale questions
Article Abstract:
A Royal College of Nursing survey has revealed low morale in four National Health Service trusts. About 40% of community nurses, 50% of district nurses and 68% of health visitors feel a disproportionate amount of time is spent on administration. A team approach to patient care could improve morale as nurses criticise managers for over-emphasising cost reduction. Clerical support could reduce nurses' administrative workload and allow more time for patient contact.

The marketing morass
Article Abstract:
A National Association of Health Authorities and Trusts conference has considered the relevance of marketing to the National Health Service (NHS). Delegates disagreed over definition and application of the term. Many considered marketing strategy inappropriate for a public service. However, certain principles were applicable. Managers should aim for efficiency and high standards. Emphasis should be on client satisfaction.
